Just a quick update

Ok, so it has been dead on here. I have just finished my degree so the last few months have been hectic. But I’m keen to get back into the swing of things. I have some sweet hardware I can’t wait to use and heaps if veneer to make shells so I will hopefully keep this updated with everything I do.

The Tunnel

OK, so not a post about drums at all. But here is an awesome concept for movie distribution. It’s called the “135K project” to sum this idea up simply the creators use this.

1 FRAME= $1 135,000 FRAMES = 90 MINUTES, 90 MINUTES = 1 FILM

Once the film is complete and the frames is sold the film will be distributed via torrents. The best aspect of this is that an indie film would almost have no hope of having world-wide distribution so this idea gets it out there.

Buy your frames for the film, it’s a great idea and hopefully the film will turn out pretty decent too.

From the producers;

The Internet was meant to be a tool to connect us. It was meant to break down borders and liberate. Now we have an entire generation who are being labelled criminals for using that tool. But perhaps rather than wasting millions of dollars fighting a losing battle against internet piracy, we should try and find a way to embrace the possibilities that this new world brings…

That’s the thought that inspired this project. We believe that if we stop fighting  the peer to peer networks, they could become the biggest revolution we have ever seen in the way we share entertainment and information.

After spending years being frustrated by what we saw as the movie industry’s  short-sighted and conventional outlook towards the online community, we decided it was time to try something different – The 135K Project was born.

We figured that movie posters and collectable frames from movies are being sold every day, so what if we could raise the money to make “The Tunnel” by selling every individual frame of it? We would be able to make a movie unencumbered by a studio’s need for box office. We could do what we got into the industry to do in the first place. Tell stories we like and get them out there so people could enjoy them.

What’s the key to doing that? You.

If you like the look of “The Tunnel” or the idea behind The 135K Project – buy a frame or two, blog about it, follow us on twitter, seed and embed the finished film when it’s released. Whatever you can do. It will all help and show the world there might just be another way. Who knows where that might lead?

14×6 10ply blackbutt

This just came hot out the mould, about 6 weeks ago. Been real busy so updates on the blog are small. all she needs is to be cut down, finished and drilled. Thinking of a natural finish – high gloss (still need to finish the shell from VC from christmas)

This is a 14×6 (well will be once cut down) 10ply all blackbutt, It probably has the best seams I have done on any drum to date.

The Wood Whisperer

Hey, I thought I would just give this link out. Its to The Wood Whisperer, great general wood working blog – got some good tips and tutorials (ranging from tool selection to finishing. Everything you need to know)

Enjoy

The Hoops

Ok, So here are the hoops that I have from Metro Drums (check them out, their work is amazing http://www.metrodrums.com/ ) Most of these Pictures are of them unfinished however they have been wet sanded (with tung oil) to 1200 grit, and are looking smooth and good. When they are done I will take some more pictures and Show the final product. They are a Blackbutt and Jarrah Hybrid hoop

A quick update

SO it has been pretty slow on here – I have hardly done anything.

made a few 6ply shells – still working on one for teh DF building contest even though it is finished (plan on getting it done eventually) it needs 1 re-ring, a sanding, a bit of a clean up and a nice finish. I have some hoops from Metro Drums – seriously want to buy a kit from him however dont really have the spare cash.

I might even update soon with some pictures of what I am currently doing at uni

either way here are some pics to see what happens when the shells dont do what I want.

Guerrilla Drum Making

“Making your own drum set is a pretty amazing experience. The feeling of completing and then playing your own customized drum set just can’t be put in words. And if you ask us, neither can drum making instructions. That’s exactly why we made a visual guide. Guerrilla Drum Making is the world’s first drum building dvd, with real life drum building scenarios that will help just about anyone make a drum set or breath new life into your old drum set.”

A finish

I have started/finished finishing the jarrah outer ply shell. I have started on and identical shell but opposite. its just using shellac based products, I will probably put a wax on top of this shell to give it a harder finish as I don’t think this is going to protect it that well.

Drum Contest

Ok, so I am entering a drum contest. AT www.dfdrumtech.com (drumfoundry’s forum)

The shell below is what I am thinking of entering, also I have been making another shell that has blackbutt on the outer plys, this may become the shell not sure yet, what ever looks better with the hoops.

Im planning on keeping my tutorials going with how to laminated veneer together. and Im trying to work out a better pressure system for the molds, will let you know when its all going good.

one shell out of the mould

OK, the first shell is out. I have started to cut it down and think about finish it. It is a jarrah and blackbutt Hybrid. 2 Ply jarrah, 2 Ply blackbutt 2 ply jarrah 3 ply blackbutt making the grand total 9 ply. it is now cut down to a 5.5 shell but some issues with the shell were found so i may have to cut it down to a 5″ or 4.5. I am now working on another shell of the same type as i have some hoops from Metro Drums being made, which I’m getting excited about.
